VRC to celebrate 17 years of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour

10th August 2020 - At a time when we need hope to get through the challenging times we are living in, the Victoria Racing Club’s (VRC) Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour will still go ahead in 2020. Ahead of its official launch, the VRC will celebrate the People’s Cup by reliving some of best moments from the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour’s past 17 years.

Since its inaugural year in 2003, the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour has travelled more than 730,000 kilometres and visited more than 500 regional, rural and metropolitan destinations.

From Dunedoo to Dunedin, Longreach to London, Broome to Birdsville and Ireland to Ipswich, the coveted trophy has travelled far and wide on tour and given communities across the globe a once in a lifetime opportunity to share in the magic that is the Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy.

The VRC will look back on past highlights, share stories from Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour Ambassadors and provide insight into the tales that make the iconic trophy the People’s Cup.

The retrospective will conclude with the launch of the 2020 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, which will officially kick off the cup’s all Australian adventure in September.

The VRC continues to hope this year’s tour will be a combination of both physical and virtual visits, and are closely monitoring the impact of COVID-19 and restrictions on travel.

VRC Chief Executive Officer Neil Wilson said the club was looking forward to reliving some of the tour’s iconic moments.

“Since the tour first began in 2003, the Lexus Melbourne Cup has travelled to some of the most iconic and interesting locations across Australia and the globe,” Mr Wilson said.

“The cup represents so much more than racing, it is the People’s Cup and the Lexus Melbourne Cup is the people’s race.

“The VRC are the custodians of this Australian icon and in these challenging times it is more important than ever we share the joy the trophy creates with communities that have been through so much this year. “We look forward to playing our part in uniting Australia and supporting fundraising efforts to assist towns big and small to get back on their feet.”
